Spotlight On: Bryan Hill & the Layabouts

This article is an instalment of the Songcards Spotlight series where we interview the humans that make it all possible. We recommend you start by clicking the play button above and reading whilst enjoying the artist's music.

Who is Bryan Hill & the Layabouts ?

Some guy named Bryan Hill and who ever he is playing with at the time.

What is your origin story?

Yikes! That sounds down right mythological. Bryan Hill was born on a day full of snow flurries and omens. He was surrounded by pianos, flutes, saxophones, sheet music, guitars and other implements of music making and appreciating.

Upon the wizard’s command, he reached for a guitar and knocked over a sax. This began his quest.

When did you realise you wanted to make music?

Hmmmm……I liked singing as a small child and thought playing hot crossover buns for the first time was pure magic. I can’t point to an exact moment, i just always enjoyed creating and playing.

Who are your long-standing influences?

Brahams, the Beatles, Metallica, Zeppelin, James Brown, Prince, Queen, Coltrane

What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned as a musician?

Enjoy the process!

What are you working on at the moment?

I am releasing a single in June called ‘Know Me Now’. It is self produced and I am extremely proud of it. It is very personal to me and some people close to me. And it rocks.

What would you tell your younger self?

Be patient with yourself. Notice/appreciate the skills you have and the progress you’ve made.
Stop comparing.

Which band or artist are you really excited about at the moment?

Glitz Biarritz- very cool glamour punk

Veruca Salt- I often find things decades after they are released.

Where can people find your music?

Bandcamp , Spotify, iTunes, Amazon, bryanhillandthelayabouts.com.

What’s next for Bryan Hill & the Layabouts ?

I have two more songs queued up to finalize and release this summer/fall. After that, there are about 10 more that just need to be recorded. So lots of material. Hopefully in the interim I/we will play some shows, shoot video and continue to explore and expand all the creative possibilities.
