<p>Hi there, I&rsquo;m Chris, founder and developer of Songcards.</p>
<p>I started building Songcards in 2023 with a single vision in mind.</p>
<p>The idea was to give artists an easy and simple way to share their music and to create a simple checkout for their fans to spend money with them.</p>
<p>Since then the concept has grown into what we have today.</p>
<p>Now Songcards is a digital music marketplace where artists can create unique collectable products out of their music and for fans to build their identity as collectors.</p>
<p>I have a lot in store for the roadmap, but more importantly, I want to hear from you.</p>
<p>Whether that be a feature request, a bug, collaboration, or anything at all, please don&rsquo;t hesitate to get in touch.</p>
<p>The relationships I&rsquo;ve already built since I started Songcards have been vital.</p>

<h2>Who is Antiquity?</h2>
<p>That&rsquo;s a good question. I often ask myself the same thing. At the moment, Dan Eccelstone, Simone Silvestroni, Justine J Hall, Diane Lotny, Mark Mancini and myself, Gerald Duchene. There are a dozen other players who do occasionally help out with tracks. But that is the heart of the group.</p>
<h2>What is your origin story?</h2>
<p>Origin story goes back to 1991 in New York. I did not want to go out on the road any longer and was trying to put together a local act. I just wasn&rsquo;t connecting with the right people until I met Mark Mancini, a regular keyboardist on the New York scene. He was very connected and he said to me one day, man, I know this woman who has got some voice, you should come and listen to her. After listening to her, we hooked up and never looked back. Diane Lotny and I have been working ever since.</p>
<p>We had some really solid years playing clubs in NY like The Ear Inn, Fat Tuesdays and the Bitter End. Our focus then shifted and then we started recording. My interest gravitated to recording and so we started changing our focus to a studio centric band, similar to Steely Dan. That was 34 years ago. Originally, we were named The Project, in reference to working mostly in the studio. We changed the name to Antiquity because another group was using the same name and it was conflicting.</p>
<h2>When did you realise you wanted to make music?</h2>
<p>I knew I wanted to go into music when I was five years old. I come from a musical family so it wasn't a big leap of faith. I&rsquo;ve never known anything else, it's sort of like a genetic curse.</p>
<h2>Who are your long-standing influences?</h2>
<p>Some of my long standing influences are mostly jazz cats. Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderly, Johnny Hodges and The Duke. Some of my modern day influences are Peter Gabriel, Donald Fagen, Bryan Ferry, Joe Henry, John Martyn, Robbie Robertson and Tom Waits.</p>
<h2>What&rsquo;s the most valuable lesson you&rsquo;ve learned as a musician?</h2>
<p>I would have to say the most valuable thing I've learned as a musician is that there are no rules once you learn the rules. Especially when it comes to songwriting.</p>
<p>If you want to be a good musician and songwriter, you have to throw away the rules at times. Most musicians just cannot or will not do that because it makes them uncomfortable but being uncomfortable is what being an artist is all about. Pablo Picasso once said, it took him all his life to paint like a child. He only attained that after he just let go of his inhibitions.</p>
<h2>What are you working on at the moment?</h2>
<p>I just work on singles these days and I&rsquo;ve slipped back into my jazz mode. In search of the ultimate jazz/rock crossover tune.</p>
<h2>What would you tell your younger self?</h2>
<p>Just keep looking forward. I might tell him to get another profession just in case. But one thing I would definitely tell my younger self, you may only get one moment of madness, don't waste it.</p>
<h2>Which band or artist are you really excited about at the moment?</h2>
<p>I&rsquo;m a big fan of London Grammar. I find her voice very haunting and unique. I Listen to a lot of Tom McRae, Elbow and Florence and The Machine who I really think is a force.</p>
<h2>Where can people find your music?</h2>
<p>On most streaming platforms but obviously on Songcards and Bandcamp but ive lessened out presence on Spotify as it no longer serves a purpose</p>
<h2>What&rsquo;s next for Antiquity?</h2>
<p>That is a little unclear but I'm obsessed about making more videos. I really love the way you can express your message marrying music and visuals. Outside of that, I don&rsquo;t think too much about the future.</p>

<h2>Who is Pocket Lint?</h2>
<p>I&rsquo;m Mark, guitarist, synth twiddler, keyboard playing noir pop maker</p>
<h2>What is your origin story?</h2>
<p>After my last band broke up now nearly 15 years ago, I took time out of music to focus on other things. I started tentatively recording again in about 2017 but then in 2020 when lockdown hit I needed something to fill my time. I initially decided to try to carve cameos from amethyst, but that is actually quite hard with no tools or training. So I slunk back into what I knew a bit about.</p>
<p>I would say Pocket Lint as I understand it came about sometime around the winter of 2020 with the writing of When Winter Comes Again and the beginning of the Themes for Silcaville project. That was when I feel that I found my voice.</p>
<h2>When did you realise you wanted to make music?</h2>
<p>Making music or playing it? I have played for as long as I can remember. I played piano from 5 and always loved performing. Once I was in bands in my teens playing guitar, I realised that if I wanted to be famous then I would need to write and so started writing music.</p>
<p>In my 20s I became more interested in writing the whole songs and working on getting ideas into songs and that is something that has really continued into Pocket Lint. Though with one significant difference.</p>
<p>When I was younger, my songs were very influenced by literature. These days it is much more likely that visual stimuli will trigger something in me that makes me write. For example, my Gallery album is all inspired by works of art. Rather than tell a story, my music tries to paint the listener a picture or vignette of a place, time or feeling.</p>
<h2>Who are your long-standing influences?</h2>
<p>I have so so many. I picked up a guitar after first hearing Jimi, and there is definitely still some of that in my approach, but I think the ones I can hear most obviously are those post punk ones, so Magazine, Soft Cell, Human League, and then artistic spirits like Kate Bush, Scott Walker and Bjork, allied to those 70s artists like Bowie, whose entire approach is huge for me, Eno&rsquo;s solo albums. Basically, art pop, art rock, a touch of goth sensibility and bleeps, but I listen to a huge range of stuff, for example at the moment I have John Martyn playing and earlier it was the Cure and before that Wire.</p>
<p>I have to say though as a guitarist, Graham Coxon. His approach to playing guitar was a huge huge thing to me. It moved me away from being a Jimmy Page wannabe to trying to service the song, rather than seeing the verse and the chorus of things that had to be slogged through til we got to the part where I got to solo. I think intellectually Bowie&rsquo;s idea of how to stay creative is a huge touchstone and Eno&rsquo;s point about using the crap instruments you have to forge your own unique sound.</p>
<p>I like experimenting and I love music like the 60s pysch where it is clear they are at the edge of what they know and understand and to me that gives it an excitement. I have a fear of repeating myself so any artists whose career is one of progression and not merely adding more water to their original sound.</p>
<h2>What&rsquo;s the most valuable lesson you&rsquo;ve learned as a musician?</h2>
<p>I was incredibly lucky when I was younger that I regularly got to jam with amazing older musicians through my guitar teacher, Colin Browne, who had played with Kate Bush. I&rsquo;d regularly get up to do a song with him and other amazing musicians who he played with.</p>
<p>I learnt so much about playing with others and how to listen by doing that. I played bass for him for a summer and that was probably the best musical training I ever received. We never had a set list, it was a case of listening as one day songs would be in one key and the next another. I became very good at walking bass lines to find the key. I also learnt a lot when I attended the guitar institute as I learnt what I never wanted to be. Without that experience, I would have perhaps never run with open arms to synthesisers.</p>
<h2>What are you working on at the moment?</h2>
<p>I am finishing off my new album Wunderkammer, which is all about a cabinet of curios. All of these objects reveal something about the owner and, in this case, the owner is me. So this is probably my most personal work. Almost all the music is done, I am working on the vocals at the moment. I hope it will be out later in the year. I have the artwork sorted in my head too, I just need to get around to actually making it.</p>
<h2>What would you tell your younger self?</h2>
<p>Don&rsquo;t listen to producers who tell you to turn down the treble or distortion and don&rsquo;t listen to managers who tell you to change things about your band. Ever. Oh, and don&rsquo;t take yourself so seriously and sometimes try to be friendly and hide your disdain, it isn&rsquo;t an attractive trait, a look of disdain.</p>
<h2>Which band or artist are you really excited about at the moment?</h2>
<p>I am quite rubbish for new music. I listen to a lot of older music, but the last year I have been really into Michael Rother and the Cocteau Twins.</p>
<p>Like a lot of artists, I go through phases of being absolutely obsessed with things. Right now, I would say I am in a lull from that and have been enjoying listening to old favourites a bit more than diving into the unknown.</p>
<p>Oh I have been really into Kevin Ayers too. Ooooh, I have thought of an artist I have really been enjoying, well two. Both on the fabulous Monochrome Motif label. John Serrano, who has the most beautiful voice, a bit like John Martyn&rsquo;s to my ears at least. And the 18th Musician, who makes the most beautiful filmic tracks.</p>
<h2>Where can people find your music?</h2>
<p>I&rsquo;m on all streaming services, so have a look for a chap in a hat and I sell my music on Bandcamp in physical form. I have CDs, posters, Cassettes, original paintings so have a look if you are looking for something interesting. Vinyl may be coming soon too.</p>
<h2>What&rsquo;s next for Pocket Lint?</h2>
<p>Well, finishing this album soon I hope. Then doing the most hateful part which is promoting it. I lament that musicians are now forced to do marketing, but if we want people to hear it, we have to.</p>
<p>I would much rather be in the studio. I&rsquo;m also playing live in a couple of months and I need to decide how one man is going to make the amount of sound I want live. I also have already begun to form the album after next in my head. I know the sounds already, I just need to go and make them, but I am trying to be disciplined and finish Wunderkammer first.</p>

<h2 dir="ltr">Who is Cloud Blood?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">Just one guy, Josh Brill, who plays a 9 string guitar, 5 string bass, keys, and does all the vocals and songwriting.</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">What is your origin story?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">I&rsquo;ve kinda been playing guitar on and off for about 12 years now, have written a decent amount of songs within that time but wouldn&rsquo;t be able to finish them, and have quit music a few times due to life circumstances and mental health related situations.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Back in 2019 I moved from New Jersey to California and had to leave my guitars behind, so at the height of the covid pandemic I found a cheap Jackson 7 string from Guitar Center for $200 and I started seeing actual progress in my playing.</p>
<p dir="ltr">By around 2021 I got a new job that overworked me to the bone, this was in the idea for the song Task Manager started brewing. Then I sought after a 9 string after finding out Mick Gordon used one to make the DOOM Eternal soundtrack. I got one in November 2022, then when 2023 just started I was able to take a 3 week vacation from my day job and got Task Manager recorded. I released it in April of that year.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The &ldquo;Cloud Blood&rdquo; name itself came to be from a dream my girlfriend had where she said &ldquo;cloud people&rdquo; were massacring humans and the only way to defeat them was to ring them out like a rag, causing their &ldquo;Cloud Blood&rdquo; to come out. When her story was over I commented &ldquo;That would be a cool band name&rdquo; and she said &ldquo;well you can use it if you want&rdquo; so I did.</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">When did you realise you wanted to make music?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">When I was a kid, I kind of held &ldquo;rockstars&rdquo; in the highest regard out of any other humans, besides maybe game developers. I never thought I would be good enough at an instrument to become one though.</p>
<p dir="ltr">When I was 14, I had a friend who was a huge metalhead, and his dad had Guitar World magazines littered all over their house. I saw most of the musicians in the photo ops had Ibanez brand instruments, and that made me want to pick up the bass. I convinced my parents to buy me an Ibanez starter bass kit soon after.</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">Who are your long-standing influences?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">Steve Vai, Frank Zappa, Cliff Burton, Les Claypool, Horse The Band, Meshuggah, Allen Holdsworth, there&rsquo;s way too many to name.</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">What&rsquo;s the most valuable lesson you&rsquo;ve learned as a musician?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">Never stop learning. Never stop experimenting. Never let outside criticism be what stops you.</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">What are you working on at the moment?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">I have about 5 tracks in the works, with 2 about 80% done. Not sure if it&rsquo;ll be an album or EP but I&rsquo;ll be releasing at least 1 more single before then.</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">What would you tell your younger self?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">Failure at the current moment does not mean failure in the future.</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">Which band or artist are you really excited about at the moment?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">This is kind of hard for me to answer because I'm kind of in a rut when it comes to music listening as of late. Of course there&rsquo;s the classics of my influences that I&rsquo;ll always love, but I haven&rsquo;t listened to any of them lately because I can just replay it in my head.</p>
<p dir="ltr">I try to seek out new music, but it doesn&rsquo;t really hit for me, and most new releases by bands I love I found to just be disappointing. But Kendrick Lamar basically ending Drake&rsquo;s career overnight has restored some hope in humanity for me.</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">Where can people find your music?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">I&rsquo;m on Songcards, Bandcamp, just recently Ampwall, as well as Spotify, YouTube, and the rest of the major streaming services.</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">What&rsquo;s next for Cloud Blood?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">That single I mentioned before my debut album/EP (depends on amount of songs) I&rsquo;m kinda tight lipped on it for now but just know the track is metalcore mixed with dark synthwave.</p>

<h2 dir="ltr">Who is In Your Dreams?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">Andia of IYD; the transcontinental political artist that hits up drums and vocals live to electronica punk. Solo. Exactly like those solo drummers that multiplay. See Steel Beans, Nate Wood and Louis Cole. IYD is much more on the dnb / big-beat / punk page than straight rock or fusion. Sounds like Louis Cole beats x Prodigy Punk x Chemical bros x David Bowie</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">What is your origin story?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">Bass was my 1st instrument, followed by drums (at 13yrs old), which is my primary instrument now. I started playing in bands in London in 1984, a few years later I hit the London circuit hard in the early 90s, and toured Europe extensively in &lsquo;94, a few times later with other bands (Consider).</p>
<p dir="ltr">A time when Faith no more &lsquo;The real thing&rsquo; rings out across Europe, Clawfinger and the Golden era of Soundgarden. That year was an economic crash, (what luck, tnx March &lsquo;94 and John Major).&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">I continued with great industry interest in bands and projects I was involved with, without hitting it big. So I moved to Finland in 2004 to get away from it all and start again. Wasn&rsquo;t long before I was back into music, nicely rocking out in Finnish flavours, both rock and punk, when an idea hit me. Go solo. So I did. 2018 I released the 1st IYD solo EP 'Wide as Deep'.</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">When did you realise you wanted to make music?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">My father played guitar, I was inspired by the energy of music from very young, we were a musical family, we sang to acoustic guitar and keys and bass and flutes etc. and rocked those 80s radio hits, (The Buggles w/ Hanz Zimmer) I was into rock and metal, Accept, and even early Metallica!&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">Who are your long-standing influences?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">Classic rock drummer Mitch Mitchell, Rainbow in the early days for learning simple rock beats, early Metallica too, tho I struggled badly being a new drummer lol, then I found hip hop and Trouble Funk, Prodigy was a big deal, then the rave scene in London, underground parties, acid music and techo raves, with the hippie prog stuff from Ozric Tentacles and electronica with Leftfield, (I knew these people by connex to my then band Core)- all left lasting impressions on me, it was a full on experience that lasted about 20years.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">What&rsquo;s the most valuable lesson you&rsquo;ve learned as a musician?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">Do your homework! And be kind. I like to come to sessions tuned in ready to hit it. I learn my parts and I&rsquo;m well drilled. As well as be organized with events and programs.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Also, never take 2nd best for your art. If you start compromising without stretching your abilities, you're selling yourself short and your future self won&rsquo;t thank you for it. Its a slippery slope.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">What are you working on at the moment?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">A few tracks in the pipeline. A sped up and slowed down version of SHOCK dnb, a phonk track, a few crazy looper things, see &lsquo;Bruce fifth&rsquo; from IG,&nbsp; and a new track that's more edgy politically but still with electronica in mind.</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">What would you tell your younger self?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">Have patience. Intuition and hard work does pay off, stay true to yourself. And don't be too hard on yourself.&nbsp;</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">Which band or artist are you really excited about at the moment?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">Lois Cole with Genevieve Artardi with &lsquo;&rsquo;Knower&rsquo;&rsquo;. Also S.P.Y. dnb, and alt rock friends Sparralimb and lately Ursus Factory (Fin). Really exciting!&nbsp;</p>

<h2 dir="ltr">Who is Songwriteam?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">One and only one music-loving Frenchman by the name of Philippe Perelman.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Armed with his ukulele and machines.</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">What is your origin story?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">This is my latest project to date, a quasi-solo project born of the defection of a singer at the end of 2022 with whom I had started to do a few tracks, but she didn't follow up.</p>
<p dir="ltr">At the same time, I came across software that emulates the voice in a rather realistic way, a bit like VST software emulates a drum kit or a piano - it's not artificial intelligence, you have to &ldquo;play&rdquo; the voice.&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">All these years, my music has always passed through the voices of other performers, and when the project with this singer came to an end, I decided to try my hand at this vocal synthesizer</p>
<p dir="ltr">As the software only allows the field to be written in English or Japanese, I was forced to continue in English.&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">as I don't have a perfect command of this language, I rely on artificial intelligence to write the lyrics, like a human collaborator to whom I give the theme, the ideas I want to talk about, and who sends me back his or her own ideas until I've finalized what I want to say.</p>
<p dir="ltr">That's why the band's name is Songwriteam - I team up with the artificial intelligence, and on each cover the I and the A are different colors to underline this collaboration.&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">In short, I compose the music and co-write the lyrics.</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">When did you realise you wanted to make music?</h2>

<div>My parents weren't musicians at all and we didn't listen to much music at home.</div>

<div>My first shock with music came when I was about 13, when I heard the Beatles on the radio.</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>Of course, I'd listened to the radio many, many times before. Go figure, but that day something more happened.</div>
<div>I immediately went out and bought the Magical Mystery Tour cassette, and from then on the music never left me.&nbsp;And that was the start of my great album collection.</div>
<div>&nbsp;</div>
<div>Obviously, listening to it makes you want to do it. An organ with automatic accompaniment had been given to my brother and I took my first steps on this instrument&nbsp;then I learned to play bass, thanks to Paul McCartney, and I went on to play in a rock band.&nbsp;I soon realised that I wasn't interested in playing a musical instrument, but in writing songs.</div>

<div>I haven't stopped since.</div>
<h2>Who are your long-standing influences?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">My main influences date back to the 60s and 70s, when I first fell in love with the Beatles, followed by the Who, Status Quo, Supertramp, Electric Light Orchestra, Elton John, Billy Joel, Alice Cooper, the Doors, Cat Stevens and many other influences, mainly Anglo-Saxon, although Michel Berger, Laurent Voulzy and other French songwriters have since joined my Pantheon.</p>
<p dir="ltr">I was, I really am, a music nut. I've collected up to 4,000 vinyl records.</p>
<p dir="ltr">I also listened to the radio a lot, so my music was rather mainstream, accessible and melodic, which is probably reflected in my compositions.</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">What&rsquo;s the most valuable lesson you&rsquo;ve learned as a musician?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">To be honest, I don't really consider myself a musician. In my youth I was a bass player in a rock band, I played the keyboard a bit and I play the ukulele, but I'm more of a songwriter than a musician.&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">I'm not in the least a technician, I only play to write, I haven't been on stage for decades, and to tell you the truth, I don't miss it.</p>
<p dir="ltr">I have ideas that I try to put into shape, sometimes on my own, sometimes with the help of friends or people whose services I rent on Fiverr, for example.</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">What are you working on at the moment?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">I've just finished writing the closing track for Songwriteam's debut album, due out in early May.</p>
<p dir="ltr">It's called I've lost something I never had and it's about a discovery I made recently about myself, I'm Aphantasic, which means I can't see mental images I thought everyone was like me and it turns out they're not The vast majority of people can imagine places, people, things in their heads which I'm unable to do.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The album will be called Songs That Were Never Sung, a title which, if you've read the previous paragraph, speaks for itself.</p>

<p dir="ltr">I listen to a lot of music by independent artists like myself, I've always loved sharing music more than ever when I was a radio host, it was my primary mission to discover artists I liked, I recorded compilation cassettes for my friends, in short, to spread the word.</p>

<h2>What is your origin story?</h2>
<p>Yikes! That sounds down right mythological. Bryan Hill was born on a day full of snow flurries and omens. He was surrounded by pianos, flutes, saxophones, sheet music, guitars and other implements of music making and appreciating.</p>
<p>Upon the wizard&rsquo;s command, he reached for a guitar and knocked over a sax. This began his&nbsp;quest.</p>
<h2>When did you realise you wanted to make music?</h2>
<p>Hmmmm&hellip;&hellip;I liked singing as a small child and thought playing hot crossover buns for the first&nbsp;time was pure magic. I can&rsquo;t point to an exact moment, i just always enjoyed creating and&nbsp;playing.</p>
<h2>Who are your long-standing influences?</h2>
<p>Brahams, the Beatles, Metallica, Zeppelin, James Brown, Prince, Queen, Coltrane</p>

<h2>Who is VOIDSCAN?</h2>
<p>VOIDSCAN is an electronic music producer and multi-instrumentalist. Hailing from the Hawaiian Island of Oahu and currently residing in Wildlight, Florida. The name is derived from methods Void and Scan from the programming language C#. Yeah I know, nerd.&nbsp;</p>
<h2>What is your origin story?</h2>
<p>I had taken a break from music in 2012 to focus on family, education and career. In 2023 I found a hard drive that contained all my old music and got reinspired by going through and listening to it all. I would take a few hours each week and tinker with songs. After failing to raise enough capital to open a microbrewery and subsequently giving up on that dream after 10 years of brewing I needed a creative outlet. I turned that frustration into music. I compiled a few songs and sent them out into the world on an EP titled Impulse. But that was just to get the ball rolling, I had been working on a short story about humans fighting against AI set in a futuristic dystopian world. This became The Rubicon Saga, and I set out to create the soundtrack.I had originally envisioned the story as a movie. I didn't have the means to make it an actual movie, so I created the soundtrack to that movie and released it with an accompanying story.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I love to remix. The first one I ever did was New Order&rsquo;s &ldquo;Crystal&rdquo; back in 2001. Since then I&rsquo;ve done remixes for Static-X, NIN, the B-52&rsquo;s, The Baldwin Brothers (not the actors) and many more. Recently I made remixes for Tides Away, Stonegood, SERRiTONE, SAlimer and other artists.&nbsp;</p>
<h2>When did you realise you wanted to make music?</h2>
<p>I played various instruments in elementary and middle school, like clarinet and baritone horn. It wasn&rsquo;t until I got a guitar in 8th grade that I wanted to make music. After learning how to play one song by Green Day I started my first &ldquo;band&rdquo; with a group of friends in high school. I learned to DJ and did weddings and parties, even had some club gigs.I couldn&rsquo;t stay with one instrument, I learned bass by joining a jazz band, learned drums and played in an industrial metal band. I&rsquo;ve floated across genres from jazz to punk to metal to hip hop. I don&rsquo;t want to just make one style of music. That is why I prefer to release albums as a soundtrack. It tells a story across genres.&nbsp;</p>
<h2>Who are your long-standing influences?</h2>
<p>Influences include NIN, The Prodigy, Fear Factory, Fatboy Slim, Blue Stahli, Jack Trammel, The Crystal Method, Orbital and many more. Recently I released my first ever cover, a cyberpunk influenced version of NIN &ldquo;Survivalism&rdquo; from the album Year Zero.&nbsp;</p>
<h2>What&rsquo;s the most valuable lesson you&rsquo;ve learned as a musician?</h2>
<p>Never stop learning, and screw anyone&rsquo;s negative feedback. I don&rsquo;t care if you don&rsquo;t like it. If you have constructive feedback that is meaningful and useful I will listen otherwise I couldn&rsquo;t care less.&nbsp;</p>
<h2>What are you working on at the moment?</h2>
<p>I&rsquo;m working on expanding The Rubicon Saga into a trilogy, working on the story and lore for the second and third parts, and creating the soundtrack to that story. With each sequel I want to go bigger and explore more genres.</p>
<h2>What would you tell your younger self?</h2>
<p>Younger self being me as an adult. I would have told him not to give up on music.I tried various creative outlets and none can hold a candle to the therapeutic ways of writing, recording and making music. &nbsp;</p>
<h2>Which band or artist are you really excited about at the moment?</h2>
<p>As a long time NIN fan I&rsquo;m so hyped for the new album, tour and the Tron Ares soundtrack.&nbsp;</p>

<h2 class="p1">Who is Matt Cahill?</h2>
<p class="p1">Matt Cahill is an Australian singer/songwriter &amp; composer. As a graduate of the Ryzard Pusz School of Percussion he has been actively involved with bands since the early eighties, although most notably in his 18 year tenure as 'Vocalist/Guitarist' with the multi award winning Australian band 'The Violets'. Disillusioned with the traditional 'band' format, he eventually formed EVOLETAH, not so much as a band but as a 'musical project' to record songs written for The Violets that had never been recorded. Having 'Cherry Picked' members, this resulted in the project's initial offering 'Fool's Errand'.</p>
<p class="p1">Since then, he has handpicked collaborators to make albums with in not a dissimilar way to that of Jason Swinscoe, producer of 'The Cinematic Orchestra'.</p>
<p class="p1">​Among other projects, including the avant-electro duo 'The Quiet Room' &amp; Fuzz-Pop outfit 'Catch 23',</p>
<p class="p1">Matt is also the creative director of the 'Paper Rock Scissors' record label since 2005.</p>
<h2 class="p1">What is your origin story?</h2>
<p class="p1">Originally, I wanted to be a drummer, although I wasn't as successful at that discipline as I would have liked. On one occasion, I was singing along to a song on the radio with a friend of mine in the car &amp; he was visibly excited that I could pitch&hellip;He then encouraged me to turn up to a rehearsal for a band&nbsp; that he was in &amp; to my surprise, I got the job.</p>
<h2 class="p1">When did you realise you wanted to make music?</h2>
<p class="p1">When I was very small, perhaps four or five, my grandmother used to play the piano &amp; I would sit under the piano at her feet. I knew even then, that I wanted to be inside of music &amp; not just a listener. At about ten years old, I snuck into my Aunt's room (She had a very expensive HiFi stereo system) &amp; I turned it on while Al Stewert&rsquo;s &lsquo;Year of the cat&rsquo; was on the turntable. I leant my head into her very expensive speakers &amp; drifted away with the melancholy &amp; expertise of the playing&hellip;.&nbsp;</p>
<p class="p1">From that moment onwards, I was hooked.</p>

<p class="p1">When I was young &amp; signed to record companies, I had many people doing all the business side of things, &amp; so unfortunately I didn't learn the necessary skills to self-manage my art &amp; best interests. Within the modern framework of the music industry, it&rsquo;s definitely in the Artists best interest to have these skills from the get-go.</p>
<h2 class="p1">What are you working on at the moment?</h2>
<p class="p1">In amongst my &lsquo;Mixing &amp; Mastering&rsquo; work, I&rsquo;m currently in collaboration with pianist Ben Johns, for the next EVOLETAH album, to follow up the last two studio albums,</p>
<p class="p1">'Run with the Hunted' (2021) &amp; 'Calliope Dreaming' (2023) .</p>

<h2 dir="ltr">Who is CommsBreakdown?&nbsp;</h2>
<p dir="ltr">I&rsquo;m Steve Ash, a British-born, Australia-based music producer making music under the CommsBreakdown alias. I make a mix of ambient, electronica, house, techno, drum &amp; bass, post-rock and downtempo beats, merging styles to create the CommsBreakdown sound.</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">What is your origin story?</h2>
<h3 dir="ltr">The early years</h3>
<p dir="ltr">I&rsquo;ve been making music since I got my first Casio keyboard as a kid, back in the 1980s. My dad had briefly been a singer in a 1960s guitar band, and later got into amateur operatics. And my mum was a massive Beatles fan, so there was always music being played in our house.</p>
<p dir="ltr">We also had a big Yamaha organ in the house that I used to mess around on, driving my parents insane with the built-in arpeggiator and primitive drum machine rhythms.</p>
<p dir="ltr">I can remember watching Depeche Mode performing Everything Counts on the British TV show <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_of_the_Pops" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Top of The Pops</a> back in the early eighties and wishing I could make these cool synth sounds with my home keyboard. I gradually saved up enough money over the years to get better keyboards, then synths, drum machines and samplers, until I had enough gear to make what could be called vaguely decent electronic music.</p>
<h3 dir="ltr">The indie and dance years</h3>
<p dir="ltr">For a few years, I was the guitarist and co-writer in a band called The Space Kittens (not the much more successful Scottish band of the same name) with the very talented <a href="https://lacrimat.bandcamp.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lacrimat</a>. We made indie-dance crossover music in a similar vein to Utah Saints or The Shamen.&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">Then in the early nineties, dance music really exploded in the UK and I started making house, techno and drum &amp; bass tracks and getting a bit more experimental with my tunes. I had a drum &amp; bass track called <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-BVaAhup6s" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Panic Attack</a> released on a compilation from <a href="https://ra.co/dj/tonythorpe/biography" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tony Thorpe&rsquo;s</a> Vibez label, but, sadly, this didn&rsquo;t lead to much airplay or any further releases at the time.</p>
<h3 dir="ltr">The Black Dog years</h3>
<p dir="ltr">While at university studying Philosophy &amp; Electronic Music, I made contact with Ken Downie from Warp Records legends <a href="https://theblackdog.bandcamp.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Black Dog</a>. Ken was super supportive of the demo tapes (yes, tapes, that&rsquo;s long ago this is!) and encouraged me to keep sending tunes.</p>
<p dir="ltr">When Black Dog co-founders Ed Handley and Andy Turner left Black Dog Productions, Ken asked me if I&rsquo;d like to work with him. That was too good an opportunity to miss, so under the &lsquo;Hotdog&rsquo; alias, I became resident producer and remixer for the Dog Squad.&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">I worked on the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unsavoury_Products" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Unsavoury Products</a> album, collaborating with leftfield poet, Black Sifichi, to create an electronica/spoken word crossover. The title track <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mc-H_wSJQj8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Unsavoury Products</a> was one of mine. And I also remixed several big artists under the &lsquo;Bitten By The Black Dog&rsquo; remix tag. These remixes included <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHKFodFbrmE" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fever (Or A Flame)</a> by dance icon A Guy Called Gerald and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LraOPIiTs64" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Newborn</a> by Manchester indie band Elbow. I even did a remix of U2&rsquo;s <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLxopDFybBo" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New York</a> track, which didn&rsquo;t get released until about 20 years later!&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">I loved the creativity of working with The Black Dog, but issues with their management meant that I ended up having to part ways with them &ndash; and Ken teamed up with Richard and Martin Dust to great success soon after, continuing to make great music under the Black Dog name.</p>
<h3 dir="ltr">The CommsBreakdown years</h3>
<p dir="ltr">I didn&rsquo;t make much music at all for several years. Working as a freelance writer, parenthood and life in general took over and I kinda parked the whole idea of ever releasing any music.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Then in 2024, having moved to Australia and finding myself with very little freelance work to do, I decided I&rsquo;d use all this spare time to start making music again, this time as <a href="https://commsbreakdown.com/music/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CommsBreakdown</a>.</p>
<p dir="ltr">I&rsquo;d heard that Bandcamp was a good place to release music, so I pulled together enough tracks for an album and released my first ever solo album. <a href="https://commsbreakdown.bandcamp.com/album/ultra-communication" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ultra Communication</a> was a mix of electronica, ambient, techno and drum &amp; bass, collecting together my 90s and 00s influences and bringing them up to date for the 2020s.&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">Amazingly, a few people really liked the album and that spurred me on to keep making more music and putting out releases, firstly through Bandcamp and then via Distrokid to get my music onto the main streaming platforms, like Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube Music etc.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Since then, I&rsquo;ve put out several singles, EPs and remix collections and three more full-length albums &ndash; <a href="https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/commsbreakdown/music-for-a-civilised-world" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Music For A Civilised World</a>, <a href="https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/commsbreakdown/dystopia-for-soundtrack-lovers" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dystopia For Soundtrack Lovers</a> and <a href="https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/commsbreakdown/frequencies-of-the-southern-hemisphere" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Frequencies Of The Southern Hemisphere</a>.</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">When did you realise you wanted to make music?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">I listened to a lot of synth-based 80s pop music as a kid and used to try and replicate it on my crappy home keyboards (with very limited success, haha). I have a very clear memory of grabbing a Roland keyboard in the school music rooms and trying to play The Chauffeur by Duran Duran while one of my mates sang.&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">I don&rsquo;t think I ever went down the &lsquo;playing a tennis racket in front of the mirror&rsquo; route of wanting to be a rock star. But I knew I knew I loved music and wanted to be involved in it somehow. I think what I loved was sound, and messing around with it, so getting into sound engineering and music production just seemed like a logical progression.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">Who are your long-standing influences?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">My original influences were the 80s synth-pop artists who went on to influence the new wave of dance music producers in the 90s and beyond. Bands like Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode, Yazoo, Erasure, (yes, Vince Clarke is God!) Ultravox and even Duran Duran in their more synthy moments where Nick Rhodes got to explore his electronic side.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Then when dance music really took over, some big influences were Orbital, Aphex Twin, Underworld, Massive Attack, Photek, Four Tet and even Radiohead in their Kid A period.&nbsp;</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">What&rsquo;s the most valuable lesson you&rsquo;ve learned as a musician?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">I&rsquo;d say the most valuable lesson is to make music for yourself, not for an imagined audience. This sentiment was repeated in Rick Rubin&rsquo;s recent book <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/60965426-the-creative-act" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Creative Act: A Way Of Being</a>.&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">If you start out making music to please an audience, or a market, or a particular kind of DJ, you will generally make rubbish. It becomes contrived, overthought and overproduced. But if you follow your heart and make music that demonstrates your own ideas, emotions and styles, you&rsquo;ll make something unique. That&rsquo;s the path to being a true artist, in my book.</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">What are you working on at the moment?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">My most recent album was <a href="https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/commsbreakdown/frequencies-of-the-southern-hemisphere" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Frequencies Of The Southern Hemisphere</a>, a concept album of sorts. The album takes you on a journey around the sounds and everyday moods of Australia &ndash; something that was very alien to my British ears when I first moved to Australia in 2022.&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">The album features my trademark mix of ambient, electronica, downtempo and post-rock, merging it with the sounds of Aussie wildlife, cascading waterfalls, rolling thunderstorms, laughing kookaburras and the hot summer buzz of evening cicadas.</p>
<p dir="ltr">I&rsquo;ve been working on some remixes with fellow independent producers, like <a href="https://darpsyx.bandcamp.com/">DarpSyx</a>, <a href="https://stimeral.bandcamp.com/">Stimeral</a>, <a href="https://masefieldlabs.bandcamp.com/">Masefield Labs</a>, <a href="https://shugmonkey.bandcamp.com/">Shugmonkey/Nic</a>, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/@keyofdmusic">Key of D Music</a> and <a href="https://twitchyboneselectronica.bandcamp.com/">Twitchy Bones</a>. Collaboration is so much easier these days, sharing files online and sending mixes back and forth, and it&rsquo;s great to have that community vibe too, giving feedback and support to each other.</p>
<p dir="ltr">I&rsquo;ve also just released a new single, called <a href="https://commsbreakdown.bandcamp.com/track/an-unexpected-treat">An Unexpected Treat</a>, which is a dub-influenced, jazzy house track, featuring cut-up piano sample, stand-up bass and 130BPM rhythms. I&rsquo;m hoping this one does well!&nbsp;</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">What would you tell your younger self?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">Hmmm, probably to go solo sooner! Being in a band is a lot of fun, but the internal politics and conflicting directions do get kinda stressful! I like being a solo artist now, but collaborating with lots of other solo artists. It seems to be the ideal way to get that whole band vibe, but without having to go to a damp practice room to play the same song twenty times!</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">Which band or artist are you really excited about at the moment?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">I&rsquo;m pretty eclectic when listening to other artists. When you dive into Bandcamp and platforms like Songcards, you realise just how much talent there is out there. So many great songwriters, musicians and producers, all trying to get heard among the white noise of the industry.</p>
<p dir="ltr">I&rsquo;d encourage people to explore Bandcamp and Songcards to find the many musical gems that are hiding there. The mainstream is definitely not the only place to look for music.</p>
<p dir="ltr">I&rsquo;m always excited by Four Tet&rsquo;s music and Kieran Hebden&rsquo;s ability to move from chilled downtempo soundscapes to club-focused house bangers. To have a foot in both those camps is a true talent, in my opinion. And I discovered Carbon-Based Lifeforms recently and really fell in love with their mellow, spacey tracks. They create such lush arrangements and sounds.</p>

<h2 dir="ltr">What&rsquo;s next for CommsBreakdown?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">I&rsquo;ve got a few projects on the go at the moment. I&rsquo;m working with my network of independent producer friends to come up with remixes of my Frequencies Of The Southern Hemisphere album. This Remixes Of The Southern Highlands album will be out later in the year, featuring mixes from DarpSyx, Stimeral, Masefield Labs, Nic and Twitchy Bones.&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">I&rsquo;ve also just finished a &lsquo;drungle&rsquo; remix of Masefield Labs&rsquo; <a href="https://masefieldlabs.bandcamp.com/track/n-i-g-h-t-s-h-a-d-e-s" target="_blank" rel="noopener">n-i-g-h-t-s-h-a-d-e-s</a> track, which will be out later in 2025. And I&rsquo;m working with Stimeral on a collaboration for our Meraldown project too, combining our different styles for some inventive, dancefloor-friendly tracks.&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">I&rsquo;m hoping to put out another album of original CommsBreakdown tracks as well. I have maybe five tracks ready to go. <h2>Who is Spelk?</h2>
<p>Spelk is Iain Thomas. &nbsp;A multi-instrumental solo artist, producer, arranger, ghost producer, band member (Splinter (Indie Pop), 70&rsquo;s Sons (Classic Rock), Simple Majority (Electro-pop/rock)), a mix engineer (Chief Engineer at Soundtopia Studios and head of mix reviews at Unlock Your Sound) and mentor to artists worldwide.</p>
<h2>What is your origin story?</h2>
<p>I started playing the usual instruments at school, recorder, violin etc and always enjoyed making the right notes come from an instrument. &nbsp;Then at the age of 12 I was given a 12-string acoustic by my father to practice on as he played his 6 string. &nbsp;We&rsquo;d swap about and I learned the basic chords. &nbsp;At 15 I got my first electric guitar and set up a local band with a couple of mates. &nbsp;The halcyon days of 1985 saw Status Quo covers and folk standards being belted out in the local village halls and a recording session to make our demo. &nbsp;We were rubbish but we tried hard.</p>
<p>1989 saw me join Generation of The 13th Floor and we cut a demo for EMI, on the day of signing the deal the drummer left and that was that.</p>
<p>Jump to 1999 and I started mixing music on 4-track, jumping after a couple of years to digital, then full digital later on which is where I&rsquo;m at now. &nbsp;25+ years of mixing has taught me many lessons and I am eager to help others understand the art whenever possible.</p>
<p>Whether on my solo work or as part of the bands I am in, I just enjoy creating music art.</p>
<h2>When did you realise you wanted to make music?</h2>
<p>12-13 years old and it only grew stronger over the next decade.</p>
<h2>Who are your long-standing influences?</h2>
<p>I have a massive wide taste in music, from Tool to Stan Getz, Queen to Coldplay, U2 to Pachelbel, 70&rsquo;s funk all the way to modern Slap House. &nbsp;My main muse if you like however would be Sting. &nbsp;A pure genius of a man, a modern day poet and bard, and from my original part of the world so he can&rsquo;t be that bad! &nbsp;For more instrumental stuff I tend to lean more towards Depeche Mode for inspiration.</p>
<h2>What&rsquo;s the most valuable lesson you&rsquo;ve learned as a musician?</h2>
<p>I could be predictable and say practice but beyond that stage, especially for an independent artist, is to be true to your art. &nbsp;Don&rsquo;t try to be just like someone else, enjoy what you do, put your heart and soul into your creations and those that like it, will like it. &nbsp;Don&rsquo;t worry about those that don&rsquo;t, you cannot please everyone. &nbsp;And when you&rsquo;re working on a song, know when it&rsquo;s done, don&rsquo;t try and polish and polish as you&rsquo;ll never be satisfied and have time for the next one. &nbsp;Remember, the best song you may ever do could be the next one.</p>
<h2>What are you working on at the moment?</h2>
<p>I&rsquo;m currently working on a few projects in the electronica genre, something for the summer&hellip;. &nbsp;</p>
<h2>What would you tell your younger self?</h2>
<p>Keep going, you&rsquo;ve got this.</p>
<h2>Which band or artist are you really excited about at the moment?</h2>
<p>I heard about a band the other day from a friend who went to see The Pixies in London. &nbsp;They were supported by Big Special and I&rsquo;ve been listening to their back catalogue.</p>

<p>All major streaming services but the best place and where new releases will be aired is of course on Songcards!</p>
<h2>What&rsquo;s next for Spelk?</h2>
<p>Spelk will be taking a short sabbatical on releases over the summer months as a solo artist project in my own name is being finalised as we speak. An indie rock EP of 4 or 5 songs has taken up most of my year so far and I need the focus for the final push. &nbsp;But I&rsquo;m always working on new stuff&hellip;</p>

<h2>Who is the Love Process?</h2>
<p>Love Process is, in its present form, a creative space for writing songs about unusual topics. Releases to date have explored varied themes including isolation, mental health issues, obsession, substance abuse and deteriorating health.</p>
<p>The dearth of unreleased material shines as an example of my own personal struggle with perfectionism, possibly masquerading as procrastination. I can&rsquo;t release anything that isn&rsquo;t really amazing and I won&rsquo;t work a song through to its conclusion unless called upon to do so by a power inside me that cannot be denied or silenced.</p>
<p>It roars through my daily life, ripping apart the usual flow of activity, depriving me of sleep, ruining my social life and creating problems in the home.</p>
<p>That is my own creative process; fully immersive and highly toxic. I didn&rsquo;t ask for this but it is my lifelong challenge to harness this creative energy and turn it into a force for good.</p>
<h2>What is your origin story?</h2>
<p>I wanted to write a song about my dad. I missed him so much and owed him so much and desperately wanted to work through the massive hole he left in my life when he died after 12 years of struggle, following a stroke that almost killed him.</p>
<p>I&rsquo;d written songs for my school band as a teenager but this was the first one I had written as a grown up. It was dark, emotional and obscure. I couldn&rsquo;t finish it for months, let alone imagine anyone listening to it.</p>
<p>It was the tallest of orders; write a song worthy of your stoic and valiant father. I floundered but persisted until finally, metaphorically struck gold with a chorus worthy of Bowie and childlike verses reminiscent of Madness, wrapped in a zeitgeisty synth pop style. Every time I sang the final playout I broke down in tears but that was okay. I knew it was powerful.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I called on session guys within my local network to record a rushed demo for an industry meetup here on the island (I&rsquo;ve been a Majorcan resident for 22 years now).<br>They listened and liked what they heard, offered me lots of encouragement but none of these industry types ever contacted me again.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The single, &ldquo;The Heart was Saved&rdquo; was released on Valentine's day 2023. It wasn&rsquo;t playlisted, it didn&rsquo;t go viral, it wasn&rsquo;t featured on any music blogs but it was mine and it was out there and a very select few were digging it.</p>
<p>I asked folk what they thought of it and published their comments on social media to create some excitement then set to writing and recording two more songs that would be released the same year.</p>
<p>The psychedelic and experimental &ldquo;Mouth of Love&rdquo; came first. It told of an adventure inside the mouth of the entity called love. Yes, really.</p>
<p>&ldquo;Drown out my Sorrows&rdquo;, a baggy anthem on letting your life go to pieces in favour of serious drinking in a shitty flat in Gypsy Hill in the late 1990&rsquo;s, completed the trio of songs and ended the first incarnation of Love Process.</p>
<p>The original line up of Phil on vocals, James Gambold on drums, Adria Acker on keyboards and Wojtek Sobolewski on bass, slowly drifted apart as folk left the island to begin other projects.</p>
<p>This is indie, bands break up, it&rsquo;s to be expected but it still smarts a little when it happens.</p>
<p>Wojtek and I continued to work together on a few singles while I repurposed all our previous material for electronic duo and a date was set for our first live show.</p>
<p>The micro brewery named &ldquo;La Velo&rdquo; can be found after the last of a series of rundown windmills that line the start of Calle Industria in Palma. We were all set to perform our unique blend of hard to understand tragi-synth pop nostalgia, when Wojtek&rsquo;s back went and we had to cancel.</p>
<p>I did get some posters made and one still hangs on the wall of the venue, testament to a happening that perhaps was a raging success in an alternative dimension.<br>I still have four posters and they are priceless but send me an offer and I might part with one or two.</p>
<h2>When did you realise you wanted to make music?</h2>
<p>I don&rsquo;t want to make music.<br>It gets made or I can&rsquo;t think clearly.</p>
<p>It&rsquo;s my way of coping, making sense of my life, documenting events, dumping feelings and emotions and clearing muck out of my psyche.</p>
<p>I already mentioned that mine is a particularly painful creative process.<br>When I work on a song it quite literally drives me to despair but I&rsquo;ve got to answer the call, the muse won&rsquo;t wait, the moment is fleeting and time is short.</p>
<p>The hope that this might all add up to something and make some kind of sense in the future is what drives me to keep creating in world full of twerking tanned backsides, internet porn, Reggaeton, recreational drug use, endless IG beach bliss feeds, fake friends, creativity quotes, smart business hacks, money, exuberance, gluttony, famine, environmental disasters, ground warfare, trade wars, global pandemics, A.I. takeover fear, smartphone addiction, class war, sex war, cyber war, etc, etc&hellip;</p>
<h2>How can any of us make sense of any of this?</h2>
<p>The short answer is to write songs, poetry, articles, documentaries, something to show we are still feeling, still biological and still value fine art culture.</p>
<h2>Who are your long-standing influences?</h2>
<p>Time marks us. Music reminds us of a specific time.</p>
<p>&ldquo;The Amityville Horror&rdquo; and &ldquo;Tommy&rdquo; by the Who were two films I watched through a crack in the door at a cottage in Norfolk our family had rented for a week one summer. I must have been about six years old.</p>
<p>The scene with the vicar and the flies froze me to the spot, as did Tina Turner&rsquo;s rendition of the Acid Queen and Uncle Ernie&rsquo;s &ldquo;Fiddling About&rdquo;. Budget Hollywood horror and English filmmaking at its best, planted in me a love for all things terrifying, mystical and drug related.&nbsp;</p>
<p>&ldquo;Vienna&rdquo; by Ultravox, &ldquo;Ashes to Ashes&rdquo; by Bowie and &ldquo;Planet &nbsp;Earth&rdquo; by Duran Duran, all remind me of the compilation tapes I would make of the Top 40 show on Radio One on Sunday evenings, when I was seven and living in our first house in Maidstone. I got pretty good at it and managed to edit out all the smarmy disk jockey prattle.<br>&nbsp;<br>We had a Spanish lodger and my Gramps lived on the middle floor. We watched Dallas, drank weak tea and ate crumpets and my dad made cheese on toast with Worcestershire sauce for tea after number one had been announced, making wonderful distant memories&hellip;</p>
<p>&ldquo;Heartbreak City&rdquo; by the Cars was Dan&rsquo;s dad&rsquo;s best album. Dan was my best mate for years when we moved to Tonbridge so my Dad could have a shorter commute to his office in Stewart House in London. Dan&rsquo;s dad played it over the speaker in the garden while we dived in the pool and snuck swigs of Dan&rsquo;s mum&rsquo;s Pimms and lemonade when she wasn't looking.</p>
<p>The Stone Roses&rsquo; eponymous album will always remind me of a summer I spent at my uncle Brian's house in Lympstone, Devon, walking in the sand at high tide and meeting up at sunset for a pint of bitter and some Scampi Fries. RIP UB!</p>
<p>Few girls have ever gifted me music. &ldquo;Substance&rdquo; by Joy Division and the 1979 -1983 compilation by Bauhaus were received into my lost vinyl collection and played to death in the two years prior to starting Uni, thanks to Louise.</p>
<p>About the same time, Sarah, the hippy art student with goldilocks and flares, gave me a compilation tape with &ldquo;Rude Bootleg&rdquo; by Cardiacs on one side and &ldquo;Pungent - Effulgent&rdquo; by Ozric Tentacles on the other. I played them till the cassette came unspooled out of the Renault 11 tape machine.</p>
<p>University meant partying, recreational drug experimentation and girls. Studying was there for us when money dried up.</p>
<p>Chris, my flatmate and best buddy to this day, introduced me to &ldquo;Rubber Soul&rdquo; and &ldquo;Revolver&rdquo; by the Beatles and &ldquo;Violator&rdquo; by Depeche Mode. In turn I introduced him to &ldquo;Camembert Electrique&rdquo; by Gong and &ldquo;Protection&rdquo; by Massive Attack and we saw both of them live in Birmingham during our Uni years.<br>We influenced each other's musical taste for years to come and are very lucky to still be working together on new material.&nbsp;</p>
<p>&ldquo;Rhythm and Stealth&rdquo; by Leftfield, &ldquo;Echoes&rdquo; by Pink Floyd and &ldquo;Kid A&rdquo; by Radiohead all deserve a special mention for without them life in South London in 2001 would have been a bore.</p>
<p>We are the sum of our parts; the scratched records, the broken tapes, the CD&rsquo;s used for coasters, those wonderful and horrific moments lost in time but preserved in our musical memory forever.</p>
<h2>What&rsquo;s the most valuable lesson you&rsquo;ve learned as a musician?</h2>
<p>I&rsquo;ve been taught many lessons over the years.</p>
<p>I began playing piano at age 5, the old bat of a teacher used to rap my wrists with a ruler when they sagged.</p>
<p>At age six, local competitions put an end to my brief career as a violinist - I just wasn&rsquo;t good enough.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Rockabilly, especially the Guana Batz made the double bass seem edgy and at 17 I hunkered down and got good enough to be accepted into Britain's top music schools. I opted for Birmingham Conservatoire as it was far away from Kent on many levels.</p>
<p>After six years of practice and training I emerged from the Royal Academy of Music, just good enough to get employment on the London scene as a freelance bassist.</p>
<p>Touring and studio work was cool. We used to squeeze two basses into a VW Golf to avoid paying double Congestion Charge, had muso house parties and danced at the Redstar.</p>
<p>The financial highpoint of my time in London was getting booked to record all three Lord of the Rings movies with the London Philharmonic, conducted by the composer Howard Shore.</p>
<p>For the first and last time I made some good money from music, so good in fact that it pushed me up into the next tax bracket and I was still paying off the debt to the taxman even when I&rsquo;d been living and working in Spain for a few years.</p>
<p>Life in a provincial Spanish symphony orchestra is okay. I have plenty of time off to pursue many hobbies; music production, jazz singing and motorcycling are the current faves, stand up paddle, mountaineering and wine tasting are close seconds.</p>
<p>I think the lesson is this; be flexible.</p>
<p>If you are fated to have a career in music it might not be the one you had in mind when you started out. Keep yourself open as everyone you meet, make music with, rip off, cheat and lie to will teach you something about the craft and yourself.</p>
<p>My advice to anyone just starting to find their way in the music industry is to stay humble, nurture relationships with folk that matter to you, ignore the allure of fame and bring forth into the world deeply personal art, that only you could make.</p>
<p>This is a long distance race and what you will get in the end is a great body of work. Ignore schemes that may offer you overnight success and like The Stranglers said, &ldquo;Watch out for the skin deep&rdquo;.</p>
<h2>What are you working on at the moment?</h2>
<p>Man, I am so glad you asked me that because I&rsquo;m right into a new project that marks a new direction for me in this crazy world of music.</p>
<p>The story goes like this&hellip;</p>
<p>A few years ago, when I first started publishing music online, Nick Hersey, a friend from school days, gave me a huge head start when he made some artwork for a single I was putting out. He also made stickers, banners and the whole branding pack.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Nick&rsquo;s career has continued to grow and he frequently shows at top galleries in the Far East and is a present all set to debut in the Big Apple. His work is really eye-catching and as an artist he is way out of my price range!</p>
<p>So when I cheekily asked him if he wouldn't mind throwing me some scraps for my next planned release he struck a deal;<br>&ldquo;I&rsquo;ll make some artwork for your release if you&rsquo;ll help my son&rsquo;s band, Evil Giant, make a few records&rdquo;.<br>&ldquo;Sweet&rdquo;, I said.</p>
<p>After meeting in the virtual realm, we all felt that this was a good match and great things would come from this fortuitous arrangement.</p>
<p>I asked the band, Iggy and Olivia, to go really deep on song ideas and had them make a virtual scrapbook using Trello to pull it all together. We worked remotely on themes, lyrics, art ideas, finally coming up with ingredients for a single.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The first demo showed promise so I asked them to go around their student hall flat and record anything that made a cool noise. After editing the raw sound files, Evil Giant now had their own personalized percussion sound pack.</p>
<p>I really believe in hyper personalisation - make your thing your thing and your thing only.<br>The sound pack was one way to really put their stamp on their own music and afterwards the creativity just flowed&hellip;</p>
<p>Easter break stopped production for a few weeks but gave me time to start tinkering around with some audio stems Iggy had sent and I&rsquo;m presently on my way to creating a tasty remix of the song we&rsquo;re working on.</p>
<p>It&rsquo;s called Miles Away and it&rsquo;s been a joy to see them making it and I&rsquo;m honoured and proud to have had a little hand in its creation. It might even find a home here on Songcards in the near future, so look out!</p>
<p>Very shortly I will be releasing a solo track under the moniker Kent Boy but more about that when it comes out!</p>
<h2>What would you tell your younger self?</h2>
<p>Don&rsquo;t be a twat.</p>
<h2>Which band or artist are you really excited about at the moment?</h2>
<p>Last Easter Monday, my son and I went to the Wizink Centre in Madrid to see the Clancy World Tour by Twenty One Pilots.</p>
<p>Even though we weren&rsquo;t the biggest fans there (after the Skeleton Clique, who is??) and only really knew the Blurryface and Clancy albums, we sang our throats out to songs we knew and danced to the others.</p>
<p>After breaking down a little to the anthemic track, Paladin Strait, I found my composure again and revelled in the slick professionalism of the show, its artists and their team.</p>
<p>First rate entertainment that showed me anything was possible if you had a vision and determination and I&rsquo;m still hyped and can&rsquo;t wait to get making songs again because as we all know, art comes from art.</p>
<p>(While writing this I&rsquo;m working through Granddaddy&rsquo;s back catalogue. They still excite me. Try listening to He&rsquo;s Simple, he&rsquo;s Dumb, He&rsquo;s the Pilot without welling up&hellip;)</p>
<h2>Where can people find your music?</h2>
<p>This is the thing.<br>Like every independent artist out there, streaming has done me no favours whatsoever. For me it is an irrelevant income stream that one day soon I will get rid of completely.</p>
<p>After taking a marketing course a popular distributor had made available, I reached out to the creator of the course, a certain Christopher Carvalho, who was at that very moment putting the finishing lines of code to his baby before his real baby, the digital collectors app, Songcards.</p>
<p>We became fast friends and because we&rsquo;re both from the South of England, we instantly got each other's jokes and outlook even though I&rsquo;ve 10 years on him.</p>
<p>Christopher asked me for my input during various phases of the app&rsquo;s development and I think I beta tested the forerunner of the current version of the mobile app that&rsquo;s available now.</p>
<p>The Songcards app makes sense for many reasons. It&rsquo;s a realistic income stream. You can make over $2 on each card with no middle men.</p>
<p>The extra content feature is the perfect way to give something back to your fans and reward them with bonus content. For example, No One Gets Me, a Songcard I released over a year ago, includes high quality artwork, a lyric card and an in depth analysis of the meaning behind the song.</p>
<p>Whereas in turn the Drown out my Sorrows Songcard features a game called Gu&iuml;scazo that puts you in control of Guy, the song&rsquo;s anti hero, as he jumps, dodges and drinks his way through three levels of pissed-up mayhem.</p>
<p>I firmly believe that in time many more artists will be using Songcards to build deeper connections with their top fans.</p>
<h2>What&rsquo;s next for the Love Process?</h2>
<p>My dear reader, you have no idea but I&rsquo;ve just taken a 45 day hiatus in the writing of this tome.</p>
<p>Over complication seems to be a recurring motif in my lifestyle and in the interim period we painted the apartment and had it professionally cleaned. I spent too much time riding in the Sierra Tramuntana on my retro 125cc and most recently have begun to stand up paddle again, now the fine weather has returned. All the while helping Evil Giant produce a live version of their single for the upcoming Uni talent show this weekend. This afternoon I finally get to watch a film called Arthur made by my buddy Roger (aka The Viscount) leaving me Saturday to start working on generative patches for my Crave and Edge synths before another week comes around again begging for attention&hellip;</p>
<p>Please forgive my leaving you hanging but we shall now continue with more long form content.</p>
<p>What is next for the Love Process? That is a key question and demands a simple answer.</p>
<p>Like the swifts that delight my morning coffee on the balcony with their precision aerial acrobatics, I will be migrating our entire back catalogue to Songcards, all two remaining singles of it.</p>

<p>Love Process started as a four piece band which after 18 months slimmed down to a duo, whose two parts have decided to take a short break for the moment due to lifestyle changes.</p>
<p>I feel confident that we may, in time, join the star-studded ranks of many indie bands before us who flared briefly then flickered and fizzled out, later to be consigned to obscure, cult playlists and only heard at the most progressive musical meet ups.</p>
